How Many Solar Panels Do I Need? The Real Math

How Many Solar Panels Do I Need? The Real Math

Short answer: most US homes land between 15 and 25 panels. It comes from three figures of your own: daily kilowatt-hours, peak sun hours, and a 20–25% allowance for real-world losses. A 30 kWh-per-day home in a 5-sun-hour location needs about 17 450-watt panels; a 60 kWh-per-day all-electric home needs roughly 38.

The three numbers that decide everything

1. Daily usage in kWh. Kilowatt-hours per day from your electric bill (total kWh ÷ billing days) — not square footage or the bill total. The EIA puts the average US home at roughly 30 kWh per day; an all-electric 2,000 sq ft home can hit 50–60. Start with our home energy load audit.

2. Peak sun hours. Hours of full-strength sun — not daylight hours. Most of the US gets 3 to 6; Mississippi and the Gulf Coast sit around 4.5–5.

3. System losses. Panels are lab-rated. On a real roof you lose roughly 20–25% to inverter conversion, wiring, heat, dust, and orientation, so plan on 75–80% of the sticker rating. US homes need an inverter matched to 120V/240V split-phase power — buy US-voltage gear, not 220V-only European equipment.

The formula

System size (kW) = daily kWh ÷ peak sun hours ÷ 0.8, and panel count = system size (W) ÷ panel wattage. Most residential panels are 400–550W.

Worked examples

30 kWh/day, 5 sun hours: 30 ÷ 5 ÷ 0.8 = 7.5 kW; 7,500 ÷ 450 = 17 panels. 60 kWh/day, 4.5 sun hours: 60 ÷ 4.5 ÷ 0.8 = 16.7 kW; 16,700 ÷ 450 = 38 panels.

Mistakes that cost people thousands

Do not size from the bill total — two $200 bills can mean very different kWh. Size for your worst sun month, not the annual average: a 5-sun-hour location can drop to 3.5 in December. And measure the roof first: a 450W panel is roughly 26 square feet, so 17 panels need about 450 sq ft.

Frequently asked questions

Does square footage decide the count? No — daily kWh does.

Can I start small and add panels later? Yes, if the inverter and wiring are sized for expansion.

Do cloudy days change the count? Size for the worst month and add storage. See our battery bank sizing guide.

Audit before buying? Yes. Our 9 hidden energy hogs post shows efficiency wins that can mean fewer panels.

Under 10 panels, a portable power station plus a few panels may cover critical loads. Over 30, you are looking at a complete off-grid system. Browse our solar panels and kits — US-voltage options, free shipping, 30-day returns. Nova Bliss, Ocean Springs, Mississippi: +1 228-696-3541.
